I remember my introduction to Ceefax. It was on display in Rumbelows. A
26" Grundig, IIRC. (26" is tiny by modern standards, but it was really
something in those days.)

Anyway, I picked up the remote and selected a page only to be admonished
by the shop worker: "Dont play with that computer, youll break it!"
(That is literally what she said.)

What I *could* have said was: "Firstly, its not a computer. Secondly,
I probably know more about it than you do. Thirdly, why is the remote
left on display, if not for potential customers to try out this new
technology?"

What I *did* say was: "Oh, OK." Then I put the remote down and left.
And never visited Rumbelows ever again, even to this very day. (To be
scrupulously fair, I probably wouldnt have anyway since Im not really
their target demographic. But even so. Point made.)

A very good question.

Well, phuqqem.

I used to be (perhaps still am) viewed as "not a potential customer" in
electrical stores, white goods stores, and the like.

A strange mental block in many of the people who work in them.

I used to go out of my way to appear non customery. I dont want some
marketroid to start giving me the verbals when Im looking at stuff and
trying to compare tech specs.

I bet theyre absolutely convinced they are really great judges of who is
a customer and who isnt, too. :|

Im sure of it. And they laugh at the assistant who is polite and helpful to
the more unusual visitor. That assistant whose sales records were always
top...
